10X Homework Task 04/02/10

In today's lesson we watched a video that showed what life is like in Kanga Village on Mafia Island, Tanzania.
Your homework task is to use the information that you gathered to write a postcard about life in the village.
You should complete your work on the postcard template you were given, and you must include the following things:
  • A description of where the island is - use an atlas to help you
  • How you travel to the island - remember the runway scene from the video
  • What the capital city is and a description of what it is like
  • What a typical house looks like
  • How people make a living on the island
  • The different roles of men and women
  • The different types of transport & roads - describe what the 'main road' that we saw looks like
  • How are people cared for in terms of healing and medicine?
  • What education opportunities are available?
  • What people do in their spare time - remember about the girls only being allowed to play their ball games once they had been excused from their household duties
  • What tourist opportunites are available
  • How tourism is impacting on the island.

The deadline for this piece of work is: THURSDAY 11th FEBRUARY 2010

Please see Miss Chadwick in B216 if you have any problems or questions about completing this piece of work. Remember that you are always welcome to use the computers in my room to complete homework after school.

Similarities and Differences- The Swahili Coast- Tanzania

Habari Zenu? Mambo Vipi?

You have now started to look at your comparison region- The Swahili Coast in Tanzania. Throughout this unit you will need to compare the region to 'Your Place - Camden'. It is important that you look through the websites which we have suggested for you- Miss Chadwick will post them this week. Your first piece of coursework will also be based on the region and you will be asked to consider the impact tourism has had on the region.
To do well in this unit you must:
1. Know where the region is and its Characteristics (Economy, environment, population, history, landscape and climate)
2. Know why the region is at it is today
3. Identify the culture of the region
4. Know the links between the region and other countries, especially UK
5. Understand how and why the region is changing and what it might be like in the future.
6. Be able to identify the similarities and differences between the two regions.

STOP PRESS - Year 10 Geographers Caught Working!!!

Thank you to Miss Dorban for this brilliant contribution . . . Have a look, and see who you can spot!

London Olympics Fieldtrip

Thank you to all our Year 10 Geographers for a very pleasurable trip to the Olympics Site last Thursday. Despite, the cold, wet and windy weather you behaved brilliantly and produced some excellent work.

We hope you enjoyed the opportunity to see first hand, the actual changes that are happening in 'Our Place', and to experience 'real' geography in the field.

Over the next few lessons we will be following up the work from the trip by looking at the benefits and problems associated with the changes that the Olympics will bring to 'Our Place', and evaluate the impact it will have on different groups of people.

Your Geography teacher will be giving you an Olympics Fieldwork Booklet to work through.

The booklet contains some example exam style questions that will be useful to practice in order to develop your exam technique. Please complete this work to the best of your ability, and ensure you maintain your high standards for the rest of the term.

Thank you for your continued hard work . . .
